Response to Tony Blair's evidence to the Iraq Inquiry

The former Prime Minister Tony Blair's evidence to the Iraq Inquiry has proved that seven years on from the conflict, huge doubt remains about the reasons for war, the legality of the invasion and the evidence put forward in support of military action. Concerns remain on the quality of the evidence being relied upon and the inconsistency in foreign policy.

In the audience were many who had lost loved ones in the conflict. Mr Blair was given opportunity to express any regrets, it was clear that this was an invitation to Mr Blair proffer an apology. On two occasions he made no apology.  We share the bitter disappointment felt by those who feel the grief of their loss. This reluctance by Mr Blair to show courage and apologise no doubt makes the pain felt even deeper.

This should be a salutary lesson that we must all work together on tackling the terrorist threat that is based on proper evidence and a lawful process. Such action must be the collective responsibility of the international community rather than two members of the UN acting on their own accord.

We must now pick up the pieces and focus on rebuilding Iraq and ensuring stability throughout a region which has been deeply affected by conflicts.
