Aamerah Sheikh

Aamerah is a 14 year old student at Crown Hills Community College currently studying for her GSCE’s. Studying for 12 GCSE’s may be daunting for some; however, Aamerah Sheikh has also been actively participating in her school as a Student Councillor for 4 years, helping both; student s and teachers.

Outside of school, Aamerah has been giving her time by helping the community through participating in various community forums and activities. She joined the Youth Forum set up by Leicester City Council Specialist Youth Worker in 2008 and has made significant progress since then such as; presentation at De Mont Fort University, Girls Residential and The Mother’s and Daughter’s Day event. Furthermore, she is helping in setting up the Muslim Young People’s Conference later this year.


Ahmed Khan

Ahmed Khan was born, bred and educated in Nairobi, Kenya where he taught for 14 years before settling in Leicester in 1975. In Leicester he worked as a teacher at the Newry Junior School from 1975 to 1983 and was responsible for coordination of teaching English throughout the school. In 1983 he was appointed as the Deputy Head teacher of East Park Primary School and a year later he became the Acting Head teacher at the school.

In 1985 East Park Primary and the Moat Infants School amalgamated to form Spinny Hill Primary School where he became the Deputy Head teacher and Community Warden. In 1988 he was appointed to the Headship of Charnwood Primary School and thus becoming the first Asian Head teacher in Leicestershire.

Over and above his professional commitments he worked very closely with the community. In 1977 he became the founder Chair person of the Young Muslim Organisation of Leicestershire and in 1985 became the founder Chair person of The Federation of Muslim Organisations, Leicestershire and served in this capacity until 1990.

In 1985 he together with Mr Hassan Khan, who was then Vice Principle of Judge Meadow Community College became the first Muslim to be appointed to Leicester City Bench. Mr Ahmed Khan has also served as an advisor to the Race Relations Committee, Working Party on Multi Cultural Education, Section 2 Funding Committee at the County Hall, Afro Caribbean and Asian Forum and several other organisations including The Federation of Muslim Organisations in this capacity.

In 1998 he was awarded the M.B.E in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to Education in Leicestershire and in January 2008 he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Federation of Muslim Organisations.

Danielle Williams

Danielle Williams currently lives and works in Leicester as the Strategic Lead for Participation, ensuring that all services and agencies in the city are listening to and involving Children, Young People and Families in decision making and helping shape services as much as possible.
 
Danielle graduated from Leeds University with a BA in Theology and Islamic Studies and Huddersfield with a Post Grad in Youth and Community Work and has worked in the public and voluntary sector for over ten years.


Starting her working life in primary schools, her roles have gone on to include Youth Work with Muslim Young Men, Housing and Substance Use work with Adults, Project Coordination with Refugee and Asylum Seeking Communities, Project Work with the Youth Offending Service, Children's Rights Officer for Looked After Children as well as NGO Conflict Resolution work in Bosnia Herzegovina.


Huzaifah Edris Tutla

Huzaifah is an LLB graduate and currently works as a recruitment consultant for Remploy in Leicester. He is chair and radio presenter of the Articulate project which aims to express thoughts, ideas, or feelings coherently through a range of mediums including speech, forums, poetry, discussions, art, radio, podcasting, murals, film and print. He is an active member of FMO and is one of the Youth Forum leads.


Ismaeel Bin-Sulaiman

Ismaeel is a 15 year old student at Madani High School undergoing his final year. Along with already having achieved exceptional grades he has also contributed to his school and fellow students by offering his time and commitment as a school prefect and newsletter editor. His duties extend to out of school hours, where Ismaeel has worked in the capacity of a volunteer with Inner City Club Football, helping deliver training sessions to other youngsters. Since joining The Federation of Muslim Organisations, Ismaeel has applied the experience and skill as the Youth Committee Chairman, leading a group of young people from the community to work on youth related issues, culminating in a regular show during FMO Radio Ramadhan 2009.


Mohamed Hasanuddin Khan

Born in Manchester in 1934 and then spending his formative educational years in India, Mohamed Khan came back to the UK to complete his university education where he acquired a BSc in Economics at the University of London. He subsequently gained an advanced diploma in the History and Philosophy of Education in 1973 at Leicester University. He then set out to pursue a distinguished career as a teacher in various schools across Leicester including Crown Hills, Rushey Mead and Judgemeadow. In fact, he served as vice principal of Judgemeadow from 1974 to 1995. Widely travelled, during his career Mr Khan was also the member of various schools examination boards as well as serving on the Leicester Bench of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee as a Justice of Peace. Since retirement he has also acted as a trustee for the Royal Leicester Society for the Blind (VISTA).


Yasmin Sheikh

Yasmin Sheikh is a City Wide Specialist Youth Worker (Muslim Young People), appointed by the Leicester City Council and based at the FMO. Her 12 years of experience covers a vast spectrum of work, which includes; Centre based work, Project work, Crisis intervention and Residential.

Since joining the FMO in February 2009, Yasmin has been integral in setting up forums for the Young people so that their voices are heard in mainstream services. As well as her input strategically she has arranged an all girls Residential, several Consultation Events with Muslim Young People, a Mother’s and Daughter’s event and is currently working on a Conference for Young Muslims to name a few.


Yasmin Surti

Yasmin is a mother of three working in Leicester and involved in various community activities such as:

FMO -  Executive Committee Member, Lead for Health and Social Care

Ellesmere College - Community Governor. The college is a for young people with learning disabilities/difficulties

Aqoon Education Services, providing educational support and extra curricular provision for Somali children and their families - Chairperson

Ansaar, provision and support for people with learning disabilities and their families - Founder and Ex Vice Chair

She currently works at Leicester City Council as the Strategic Commissioner for Learning Disabilities and has just been seconded to the Department of Health as the National Advisor for Learning Disabilities and Ethnicity.

Yasmin Surti is passionate about equality and particularly keen to ensure our young people, who are the leaders of tomorrow, are given a fair deal and enabled to recognise and fulfil their potential as citizens of One Leicester and advocates of our beautiful Islam.
